Many people are affected by extreme heat each year. Overexposure to heat can cause issues such as extreme fatigue, headache, nausea, high temperature, sunburn/sun poisoning and much more. So, how can you stay cool on the jobsite this summer? Follow some of these tips to beat the heat!
Make sure that your worksite has access to plenty of fresh water at all times. Regularly drinking water throughout the work day will keep you hydrated, which is necessary when you're sweating. You should be consuming water every 15 to 20 minutes. And remember to leave the water supply in a shaded area, so it stays cooler.
Limit Sun Exposure
If possible, conduct your work in a shaded area to protect yourself from overexposure to the sun. Also, remember to apply and regularly reapply sunscreen to protect your skin.
Dress Appropriately
Lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing is the most appropriate attire to wear for those working outdoors and/or in extreme heat. Dark colors absorb more heat and light, so it’s important to wear lighter colored clothing to keep cool. If possible, wear a hat or protective attire to prevent sun exposure to your head and face.
These are several ways to prevent heat-related illness while on the jobsite this summer. Be mindful of the many factors that can play a role in overexposure to heat and take the necessary steps to prevent them.
