Why The KUV Became Their HVAC Van of Choice

Family-owned and -operated Mommens Heating and Cooling has been helping keep the indoor spaces of many homes, businesses and other buildings in mid-Missouri comfortable, safe and energy-efficient all year around since 1997. These skilled trade professionals specialize in installing, maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In a region of the country that faces incredibly variable temperatures from bitter cold to blistering hot, their business provides an essential service.

"Our primary focus is residential heating and cooling work. There's a wide berth of equipment out there that we take care of," said Chris Mommens, owner of Mommens Heating and Cooling.

One of the Knapheide KUV vans of Mommens Heating and Cooling arrives at a residence for installation of an air conditioning unit.

Their services include the setup of new climate control systems such as furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners, boilers, thermostats, water heaters, as well as ductwork, vents, registers and supply and exhaust fans to ensure efficient air distribution.

Whether as part of seasonal tune-ups, when performance issues arise or during emergency breakdowns, they will also inspect electrical or gas connections, lubricate moving components, calibrate temperature controls, replace faulty parts, seal leaks, refill refrigerant, clear debris blockages, flush drains and perform other necessary care or fixes.

Owner Chris Mommens admits they tried various vehicle solutions over the years before ultimately settling on the KUV van. The operation originally used pickup trucks with bed caps but found that their limited height often couldn’t accommodate large air conditioning units.

They later switched to a service truck, which resolved the height issue but left cargo in the open bed exposed to the elements. A cargo van or box truck seemed like a good middle ground, and they did use them for a while, but the lack of side compartments made HVAC technicians less efficient on the jobsite.

Eventually, a Knapheide sales rep introduced Chris to the KUV van and having already trusted the quality of the company's products and services, decided to make it the go-to work van for Mommens Heating and Cooling.

Mommens Heating And Cooling Field Techs Standing Near Kuv Van Fleet

HVAC technicians for Mommens Heating and Cooling gather for a photo in front of their fleet of Knapheide KUV vans.

"I don't see us going without the KUV bodies because with the change in technology, there's going to be more and more things that we have to carry with us, diagnostic tools, service parts, so having that extra storage in the side bins, being able to customize what happens in the back for storage as well, I think that going to be a must-have for us in the future," added Mommens.

Some notable features of their KUV include:

  • Roof Ladder Rack
  • Compartment Drawer Unit
  • PVC/Copper Pipe Rear Compartments
  • Cargo Area Tank Rack

Today, Mommens Heating and Cooling has several KUV vans in its fleet and primarily relies on them, but the company uses a Knapheide service body, KUVcc enclosed service body and KUV body turned trailer as well.
