The Latest in Mechanics Service Trucks from Knapheide
One of multiple vehicles showcased at the latest NTEA Work Truck Week was this Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD chassis cab upfitted into a Knapheide Steel KMS16 Mechanics Service Truck. Take a look at the features, options and add-ons behind this build.
Inside Our Chevy 3500 Work Truck
Some jobs don’t need a large service truck with crane when a smaller option like the Steel KMS16 Mechanics Service Truck shown at this year’s event is capable of handling the work. In fact, Knapheide offers work-ready mechanic truck packages for anything light to heavy duty mobile service.
This entry-level model of their mechanics truck lineup is built with an all-steel body and includes a reinforced crane compartment and understructure for added durability.
While it’s heavier than the aluminum version, this specific setup helps offset some weight by using an aluminum electric service truck crane instead of a traditional steel hydraulic one. Thanks to its lighter material construction and electric power system, the crane reduces overall weight by about 230 pounds.
This truck included Knapheide’s new double-spring door retainers (release TBD) and Milwaukee PACKOUT storage adapter plates (coming soon).
It also featured add-on equipment and accessories from other brands including a Stellar crane, Boss air compressor, CTech Manufacturing™ tool drawers and a Reelcraft hose reel system.

Curbside SetupCurbside Setup
The curbside of this 9‑ft steel service body features a 40‑inch side pack height, including a front vertical compartment containing two adjustable shelves with dividers. The wheel well compartment has one adjustable shelf with dividers and includes Milwaukee® PACKOUT™ storage secured with Knapheide adapter plates to keep cargo organized and accessible. A rear crane compartment includes one adjustable shelf with dividers and houses equipment controls and air compressor hose reel, keeping key systems protected and ready to use.
CraneCrane
This electric crane can lift up to 3,200 pounds and reach out 15 feet, making it easy for mechanics to safely lift and move heavy parts or equipment around the jobsite. It can be operated with a remote or from the rear compartment using simple push-button controls and display screens, plus there’s another display inside the cab. Manual outriggers help keep the truck stable while the crane is in use.
Air CompressorAir Compressor
This 35CFM gas engine-driven rotary screw air compressor can power air tools, inflates tires, and helps clean or blow debris from equipment right in the field. It doesn't need an air storage tank and includes a filter, regulator, and lubricator to maintain steady airflow and protect tools. A hose reel in the rear curbside compartment extends from the bumper and retracts easily for convenient use and storage.
Workbench BumperWorkbench Bumper
This full-width KnapLiner coated bumper provides a durable, convenient work surface and includes a lockable pass-through compartment for storing tools and materials. It also has the OEM backup camera built into the bumper for better visibility when reversing. Grip‑strut steps on each side make it easier to access the truck, and the air compressor hose conveniently retracts from the rear for quick use.
Cab GuardCab Guard
This steel cab guard shields the cab and rear window from shifting cargo in the bed during transport and provides added safety for operators if the crane makes accidental contact. Its hex-pattern design improves rear visibility without sacrificing strength.
Work LightingWork Lighting
The truck is equipped with four adjustable work lights, each producing 3,000 lumens, to provide bright, focused lighting for jobs in low-light conditions. Two lights are mounted on the front compartment and two on the rear for full coverage around the truck. Strobe functionality built into the taillights enhances visibility and adds an extra level of safety on the job site.
KnaplinerKnapLiner
This tough, non-slip coating is applied to the body's front panels, cargo bed floor and sides, compartment tops, bulkhead, cab guard, tailgate, and rear bumper. It helps protect these surfaces from scratches, dents, corrosion, chemicals, and everyday wear and tear.
