When a customer calls, the Knapheide Mechanics Truck brings the mechanic to the job site.

Superior Fleet Solutions’ mechanics use the KMT to service heavy-duty trucks, equipment and machinery.

When a customer calls Superior Fleet Solutions, they need a mechanic right away.

Specializing in heavy-duty trucks, equipment and machinery, Superior knows its customers need help as soon as possible, because downtime is expensive.

“That’s money they’re losing every hour when they have a broken machine and guys sitting around,” said Cody Milne, Lead Field Tech for Superior. “So it’s extremely important that I’m on my A-game.”

Based in Seguin, Superior’s main service area is between Houston, Austin and San Antonio, but it works throughout Texas. It has mechanics that work out of the shop, as well as mobile mechanics who work out of service trucks.

“That’s where we’re looking to grow the most, because that’s where the customer need is these days,” said Superior Owner Leland Barrow. “Everybody nowadays wants things done immediately, and to do it immediately, a lot of times you have to do it where they’re at. The old ways of having to go pick up stuff and bring it here and work on it, those are going away, and it’s a new day where you know we’ve got to fix problems where they’re at.”

Finding the Right Work Truck

When Superior first started out, the veteran-owned business bought smaller-body trucks with service beds. It’s since moved to Knapheide Mechanics Trucks to support its customers with complex and diverse problems.

“If a technician goes out to the field and they have needs that their truck can’t provide, then that’s a limiting factor, and it requires rescheduling somebody else to go out there, and it’s just a hassle for the customers and it’s a hassle for us,” Barrow said. “By providing them essentially a ‘Swiss Army knife,’ they can accomplish most or all the tasks that they need to accomplish out there in the field. They are much more able to meet our customers’ needs and their demands.”

The longevity of Knapheide service bodies and mechanics trucks have proven their worth to Superior, especially when the service bodies outlast the chassis.

“If we can get the maximum amount of life out of these trucks, especially compared to some of the competitors, that’s hugely important to us, because that means we don’t have to turn service trucks. We just don’t have issues with them,” Barrow said. “Some of the (other) service trucks we’ve sent out into the field, they just don’t last as far as the expectations when we first purchased them. We need the truck that’s going to last the longest and do the best as far as the service work.”

Superior finds the personal connections beneficial when dealing with Knapheide.

“I like that I can depend on them not just at the point of sale but all the way through if there’s an issue and even to the point if we want to replace the truck,” Barrow said. “I can still reach out to them and be like ‘Hey, we want to exchange out this truck for another one.’”

Knapheide Stands Out in the Field

Milne sees the attention to detail in his 2024 Ram 5500 with a KMT Service Body.

“They have talked to a lot of guys who are in these trucks every day and in the field every day. They have taken those opinions and advice into effect and have implemented that stuff.”

Features Milne likes in his work truck include:

  • Control panel where he can control lighting, crane, air compressor and aux settings outside of the truck
  • Ammo can dividers and individual dividers for all storage areas
  • Bumper box for large tools that can’t be stored elsewhere.
  • Knapliner bumper that can be used as workspace

“The body type definitely impacts performance on the job. Say if I just had a regular service body – no crane, no compressor – and I’m on a job where I need to lift something that’s extremely heavy, that puts a handicap on me, not being able to do that job but complete that job, but also on the company,” Milne said. “So now we’re having to spend more time and resources getting another mechanic sent over there with the crane. It’s just a lot more cost effective to have the right setup than it is to have just a service truck.”

“Having skilled technicians, they need to be in the best trucks that we can provide. That’s just what this environment and this industry and these technicians ask for.”
