Types of Cargo Tie-Downs
Ratchet Straps
Ratchet straps typically consist of a polyester, nylon or other durable material strap that is threaded through a ratcheting buckle and handle, which provides leverage to tighten and lock the strap effectively around the cargo. They typically include hooks or other end fittings that attach to anchor points on the vehicle, such as rub rails, tie-down rings, or E-Track slots. Because of their versatility and affordability, these tend to be among the most popular type of cargo tie-down accessory.
E-Track Accessories
E-Track are wall, floor or ceiling mounted rails inside of a vehicle’s cargo area that feature a series of evenly spaced slots for anchoring a variety of compatible accessories such as straps, hooks, rings, holders and bins. These attachments can be repositioned along the track, allowing users to adjust their configuration to accommodate and properly secure contents of varying sizes and shapes.
Cargo Netting
Cargo netting is a webbing of straps, cords, or ropes designed to contain loose, bulk cargo such as debris or boxes, or irregularly shaped or sized items like equipment while in transit. They will include multiple hooks or other end fittings around the edging that can be connected to anchor points on the vehicle. Oftentimes, they have adjustment mechanisms that allow the netting to be tightened or loosened around the cargo as needed.
Flatbed Winches
Flatbed winches dispense a polyester or nylon derived strap from a spool mounted along the sides of a flatbed trailer or truck bed. They may be installed on a fixed position or on a rail system that allows it to slide along the length of the body to any desired position. Winding of the winch allows the operator to adjust the tension on the cargo sitting on the flatbed until it is secured in a manner that it will not shift during transportation.
