Beat the Heat: Tips for Staying Cool on the Jobsite this Summer

July 10th, 2019

Many people are affected by extreme heat each year. Overexposure to heat can cause issues such as extreme fatigue, headache, nausea, high temperature, sunburn/sun poisoning, and much more. So how can you stay cool on the jobsite this summer? Follow some of these tips to beat the heat.

Hydrate

Make sure that your worksite has access to plenty of fresh water at all times. Leave the water supply in a shaded area. Regularly drinking water throughout the work day will keep you hydrated/rehydrate following the release of sweat due to high temperatures in your working environment. You should be consuming water every 15 to 20 minutes.

Limit Sun Exposure

If possible, conduct your work in a shaded area to protect yourself from overexposure to the sun. Also, remember to apply and regularly reapply sunscreen to protect your skin.

Dress Appropriately

Cool and loose-fitting clothing is the most appropriate attire to wear for those working outdoors and/or in extreme heat. Dark colors absorb more heat and light, so it’s important to wear lighter colored clothing to keep cool. If possible, wear a hat or protective attire to prevent sun exposure to your head and face.

Start Early

Getting an early start will allow more work to be done before the heat reaches its peak for the day. Continue to check the weather forecast and plan accordingly in an effort to reduce the amount of work being done during the height of the heatwave.

There are several ways to prevent heat-related illness while on the jobsite this summer. Be mindful of the many factors that can play a role in overexposure to heat and take the necessary steps to prevent them.
